How painful is a foot tattoo, just above the toes?

I want to get a meaningful inscription on my foot--on the top of my foot right above my toes. I can imagine that this is a painful area to get tattooed. To anyone with experience in having been tattooed in this area, how was it? Almost unbearable? Not as bad as you expected? What? Your feedback is appreciated! I want to know what to expect before I get 'er done.
